HOST Program Hillsborough vs. Home Daycare: Hours & Costs

HOST Program Hillsborough vs. Home Daycare: Hours & Costs

If your child attends a Hillsborough County public school, the HOST program is probably the first after school option you heard about. It is affordable and right on campus. But it isn’t the right fit for every family, especially if you work late.

The best after school program is the one that matches your work schedule, not the other way around.

Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

What the HOST program costs

According to the Weekly Fees page of Hillsborough County Public Schools, elementary HOST costs $15 per week before school, $75 per week after school or $90 per week for both, plus a $30 registration fee. HCPS notes that fees change for the 2026-27 school year, so confirm current prices with your school.

Where HOST works well

Your child stays at their own school, with classmates, and you don’t need transportation. If you can pick up before 6 PM, it is a strong, budget-friendly choice.

Where a home daycare fits better

HOST and most county and YMCA programs close around 6 PM. If you get off work at 6 or later, that last hour becomes a daily race. A home daycare with school pickup can cover that gap: your child is picked up at school, spends the afternoon in a small group and, at Little Champions, can stay until 7 PM or be dropped off at home.

Questions to ask before choosing

What time do I really get home? Is there a waiting list? Who picks my child up on non-school days? Does my child do better in a big group or a small one?
