Safe Toys for Toddlers: Age-by-Age Guide | Little Champions

Choosing safe toys for toddlers is harder than it looks. The box says “3+”, but your 2-year-old already wants everything her big brother plays with. Here is the simple, age-by-age checklist we use every day at our home daycare in Tampa.

Quick rule: if a toy or any part of it fits inside an empty toilet paper roll, it is a choking hazard for children under 3.

That 5-second test catches most of the risks: small balls, marbles, detachable eyes on stuffed animals and the little pieces that come off cheap toys after a few drops.

Safe toys for babies (0–12 months)

Look for soft books, rattles too big to fit in the mouth, teething rings and fabric blocks. Skip anything with strings or cords longer than a few inches, and keep stuffed animals out of the crib while your baby sleeps.

Safe toys for toddlers (1–3 years)

Large building blocks, stacking cups, push-and-pull toys, chunky crayons and simple puzzles with big knobs are all great choices. Avoid toys with button batteries or small magnets. If swallowed, they can cause serious internal injuries within hours. Check that battery compartments close with a screw.

Safe toys for preschoolers (3–5 years)

Now kids can handle smaller pieces, art supplies and pretend-play sets, as long as younger siblings can’t reach them. Keep “big kid” toys on a high shelf, in a separate bin.

One last check: recalls

Before buying used toys or hand-me-downs, search the name on CPSC.gov to see if it has been recalled. It takes one minute and is free.

At Little Champions Daycare, we pick toys by age and keep small pieces away from the little ones, so every child can play freely. Want to see our play area? Book a free tour or call (813) 447-6356.
