School Pickup Safety: 5 Rules to Teach Your Kids | Tampa

School pickup safety starts long before the bell rings. Pickup lines are busy, kids are excited, and a few seconds of confusion are all it takes for something to go wrong. These 5 rules are easy to teach at the dinner table and make a real difference.

The best safety plan is one your child can repeat back to you in their own words.

Practice them a few times, then ask your child “what would you do if…” questions. Kids remember what they rehearse.

1. Always wait at the same spot

Agree on one exact place: by the front office, at the car line or next to their teacher. If plans change, they stay there and tell an adult.

2. Only leave with people on the list

Teach your child the names of the adults allowed to pick them up. Anyone else, even a familiar neighbor, needs to be checked by the school first.

3. Use a family code word

Choose a word only your family knows. If someone new ever comes for them, they must say the code word first.

4. Buckle up before the car moves

Every ride, every time. Florida law requires children 5 and under to ride in a federally approved child restraint, and older kids should use a booster until the seat belt fits correctly across their chest and hips.

5. Stay seated and calm in the vehicle

No standing, no unbuckling and no throwing things. A calm car is a safe car for the driver and every child inside.
